The search for strategic approaches to shaping change toward democracy and a market economy is complex. Because every process of development and transformation is unique, each process requires individual in-depth analysis. Identifying those factors determining success or failure in transition over the past decade provides a productive knowledge base from which others can learn, avoid similar mistakes and identify the most promising paths to take. »





Background

The combination of democracy and a market economy is crucial to the sustainable future of states. Conversely, developed democracies have a vested interest in actively supporting transitions to democracy and a market economy if they are to contribute to international stability. »

Carl Bertelsmann Prize 2001
